Constitutional reforms only after General Elections

A final decision on Constitutional reforms will be taken after the upcoming Parliamentary elections, Chief Government Whip and Roads and Highways, Ports and Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando has said.

Minister Fernando made the above comment in response to a question by a journalist in Parliament last week.

“Having a stable government and clear Constitution are crucial factors for a country. The existing Constitution is a distorted version. We don’t have the majority in Parliament. Yet, we are continuing the development process. The UNP which was in the power when the 19th Amendment was enacted is responsible for the prevailing constitutional imbalance. The JVP is also responsible for this,” Minister Fernando said.

“They have amended the Constitution at the behest of the international community. It has also hindered development activities which were expected to be carried out by this government, in line with the vision of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. We are unable to present a new budget and provide needed financial assistance for envisioned projects. We expect Parliament will be dissolved in March and we have to wait till then,” the Minister said.
