Taking Tea In A Paper Cup? Read This

Taking tea in a disposable paper cup is normal these days. But, how safe is the paper cup? Recent studies say that the hot liquid served in paper cups could cause the degradation of microplastic lining in the paper cup and this degraded material could lead to health hazards. The study was conducted by the scientists at the IIT, Kharagpur. The paper cups are normally lined by a thin film of polythene and other co-polymers. These chemicals get degraded within 15 minutes due to the hot liquid poured. The studty says that 25000 micron sized micro-plastic particles are released into 100 ml of hot liquid at 95 to 90 degrees. Thus, if a person consumes three cups of tea or coffee on an average, would be allowing 75000 tiny micro-plastic particles into his body.

Apart from the presence of toxic heavy metals like Cadmium, Chromium and Paladium on the teacup linings is also dangerous for the health of the tea-drinkers. The scientists, who studied the paper cups, said that while the cups should have a lining of cellulose polymers, which are not as dangerous, the makers are lining them with high density polyethylene grade. Soon after pouring the liquid, the micro-particles were found to be getting released into the drink.
