Gazette notifications pertaining to sale of toddy approved in Parliament!!

Parliament today approved three gazette notifications pertaining to the sale of toddy.

Under the ordinances, the maximum amount of toddy transported by an individual was increased to 3 litres from one and a half litres and to extend the time for allowing toddy to be sold to 9 p.m. Also under the new regulations, the definition of toddy has been changed.

SJB MP Buddhika Pathirana who staged objections on behalf of his party said the new regulations will encourage people to consume more today and encourage the production of artificial toddy as concessions given under the new regulations will benefit large scale, artificial toddy manufacturers.

“The daily need of toddy in Sri Lanka is 160,000 litres and natural toddy accounts for only 40,000 litres. The rest is artificial toddy which is made out of salt, sugar and yeast. Most of jaggery and vinegar which is used in Sri Lanka and even in Parliament canteen is made out of artificial toddy,” the MP said.

Also, he alleged that a businessman from the North had made a confession that he had produced illegal toddy with the help of some officers in the Excise Department.
