Lunch sheets less than 20 microns is beyond truth, even manufacturers can’t recognize: Minister

Lunch sheets thickness less than 20 microns is completely beyond truth. Even manufacturing companies cannot measure the gauge, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

He made these remarks while participating in a discussion held at the Ministry. The Minister  advised the manufacturing companies to ban lunch sheets less than 20 microns and told them to show him the lunch sheets which are lesser than 20 microns.

Unfortunately, the companies have failed to identify it. Therefore, this is unbelievable.

"How can ordinary people figure them out if manufacturing companies are unable to gauge it's thickness? "Therefore, lunch sheets made of polythene and plastic will be banned without any such reasons for justification," said the Minister.

"A large number of workers used to carry tea in small grocery bags and drink using plastic straws and throw them away. It is very harmful to consume food in shopping bags and to carry hot beverages like tea because it can produce harmful chemicals. People used to carry illicit liquor and and other substances in shopping bags. Alcohol can react to plastic," he said.

Shopping bags and lunch sheets are not recyclable. About 98% of these substances used by the public are released into the environment.

However, since 2017, we have been in dialogue with those companies regarding these lunch sheets and shopping bags. But these companies never came out with alternative suggestions. Therefore, we will not grant any grace period again. We will take steps to ban both these products later this year.
