Lankan arrested for indulging Uzbek woman in sex trade

 

A 31-year old Sri Lankan was arrested on charges of human trafficking, as he had brought down a 36-year old woman from Uzbekistan and indulged her in prostitution in Sri Lanka.

Police Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana said the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested the suspect, a resident of Wellawatta  following a complaint by the  International Organization for Migration (IOM).

He said the suspect has brought the Uzbek female into the country last year and indulged her in sexual activities.

It was learnt that the suspect's wife, an Uzbek national, has been sentenced by the court in Sri Lanka for the same offence and currently she is serving a jail term here.

The spokesman said the suspect would be produced before the magistrate in terms of the provisions of the penal code.

He said human trafficking is an offence and if a person is found guilty of the charges of human trafficking, the court can impose 10 to 20 years, rigorous imprisonment as the punishment.
