Hurriedly produced COVID vaccines not perfect : Tissa Vitharana

COVID- 19 vaccines are not perfect in general terms as they have been produced hurriedly when the globe was suddenly hit by the pandemic whilst some vaccines such as Moderna and Pfizer may not be effective specifically, Member of Parliament Professor Tissa Vitharana, a Virologist by profession, told Daily Mirror yesterday.

Genetically modified food is banned in Europe but vaccines such as Moderna and Pfizer are used

He said that vaccines were not perfect generally as they were produced hurriedly unlike the vaccines that have been produced for other diseases. “It took at least seven years for the medical experts to produce vaccines for measles, polio and chickenpox and were perfect but the COVID- 19 vaccines had been produced hurriedly. Therefore COVID- 19 vaccines may not be perfect,” Professor Vitharana said.

“The technology used to produce Moderna and Pfizer vaccines is a modern technology where genes are changed. This is similar to producing genetically modified food. Genetically modified food is banned in Europe but vaccines such as Moderna and Pfizer are used in many counties. I would say that Sinopharm, Sputnik and Astrazeneca are more effective,” he added.
