Dairy farmers call for Rs.120 price hike for 1 Lt. milk: Federation!!

The All Ceylon Dairy Farmers' Federation is inrequesting a minimum of Rs.120 price hike for one litre of milk, National Centre for the Protection of Dairy Farmers Susantha Kumara Navaratne said.

He said the profit received by milk powder companies after increasing their prices is not shared with the dairy farmers.

The milk powder companies are enjoying that profit, he said.

"We explained to them about the difficulties the dairy farmers are faced with. With the current situation, the cost of producing one litre of milk has gone up drastically. The prices of cattle medicine and work treatment, fodder and minerals have also gone up. The chances of getting the cows vaccinated has now passed," he said.

This difficulty has been faced by the 400,000 strong dairy farmers across the country, Mr. Navaratne said.

Therefore, we need to increase the price of milk by a minimum of Rs.120. At present, the farmers are getting between Rs. 80 and Rs. 100 per litre of milk, Mr. Navaratne added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
