Move to deduct pension for insurance scheme ruthless: Dr. Harini

Claiming that it was the duty of the Government to look after the senior citizens, Parliamentarian Dr. Harini Amarasooriya said today that it was a ruthless move to deduct certain amount of money from the pension to cover an insurance scheme.

She told a news conference organised by the Progressive Women’s Collective that pension is paid to senior citizens for them to lead a peaceful life in their latter part of their lives for the service they rendered to the nation over the years.

She said a huge amount of money is spent in foriegn countries for the wellbeing of senior citizens apart from the pension and other privileges and added that the Government is planning to deduct certain amount of money from their pension and claiming as cover for an insurance scheme.

“The Government has stooped down to a situation to deduct some Rs. 400 to Rs. 600 from the elders' pension, especially at this hard time for those who get a fixed income, as the cost of living is skyrocketing. In such a situation, deducting from pension is a ruthless and senseless practice,” she said.

She expressed hope that this decision would be revoked and added that if it was not so, the senior citizens would also be forced to take to the streets.
