Police face violence to arrest youth with drugs

Nine persons including three women have been arrested for assaulting and obstructing the duties of police officers who had arrested an 18-year-old youth with heroin in Kahatagasdigiya.

The officers of the Anuradhapura Division Narcotics Unit acting on a tip-off conducted a raid at Thurukkuragama in Kahatagasdigiya on Saturday.

They arrested a suspect with possession of 27 grams of heroin during the raid.

However, a group of residents who stormed into the scene had assaulted the officers and tried to release the suspect from police custody.

An Inspector of Police and a Constable were injured in the attack and were admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital.

The arrested group aged between 16 and 68 will be produced in the Anuradhapura Magistrate's Court along with the suspect arrested with heroin, police said.
