Reconsider decision to shut down Consulate in Cyprus: Hadunnetti
Former JVP MP Sunil Hadunnetti today urged the government to reconsider the decision to shut down the Sri Lankan Consulate in Cyprus claiming that Sri Lankan expatriates in Cyprus had faced difficulties due to the decision.
In a letter to the Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris, he said more than 6,000 Sri Lankan expatriate workers who worked in Cyprus had faced difficulty in claiming the Cyprus Social Security Fund which they had contributed to.
"Some Sri Lankans had been unable to get down about Rs.5 to 6 million due to the laws in that country. The Sri Lankan Consulate in Cyprus was engaged in diplomatic intervention in the matter. However, shutting down of the Consulate has been an obstacle now," he said.
Hadunnette also said Sri Lankans who are still employed there have also been left in the lurch without any means to seek diplomatic missions.
He said it was not reasonable to shut down diplomatic missions in a country where diplomatic ties were vital and a large number of Sri Lankans were affected.
He said the government should reconsider the decision to shut down the Consulate in Cyprus or appoint an officer by the foreign ministry, who can deal with the matters related to the Cyprus Social Security Fund.
Hadunnetti said it was regrettable that the government had to shut down three foreign missions in Cyprus, Nigeria and Frankfurt due to the dollar crisis.
