Restraining order for today’s LTTE function in Kandy

 


A restraining order has been obtained by the Kandy police following an information that an event is scheduled to be held today by a suspected group of LTTE supporters, a senior official said.

He said the event was scheduled to be held in a hotel in Mulgampola in Kandy.

The restraint order was taken against the management of the hotel against holding such an event today.

The facilitation event was to be organised under the theme of "treating prisoners humanely." 

During the meeting, it was organised that the LTTE supporters would be facilitated and an award ceremony for the families of the LTTE prisoners, the family members of the LTTE people who were involved in the attack at the Sri Dalada Maligawa and Sri Maha Bodhiya, the Sri Lankan human rights activist and missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda's wife Sandya Eknaligoda, was to be held.

The former LTTE cadre Sivaraja Jenivan alias Senan who received the presidential pardon from the former President Maithripala Sirisena for attempting to assassinate him in 2006, and several other LTTE members were invited for the felicitation, the senior official said.

The felicitation and award ceremony were planned to coincide with the world "Human Rights Day," which falls today.

The ceremony was organized by a Christian priest attached to a church in Matale Road, Wattegama, Kandy.

The said priest is running a human rights council office at Nattarampotha, Digana, police said.
