Indian coast guard rescues six Lankan fled to TN over economic crisis!!


The Indian Coast Guard rescued six Sri Lankan nationals, including three children, who were stranded on the fourth island off the coast of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, after they fled Sri Lanka which has been hit by an economic crisis and is facing an acute shortage of food and fuel.

The refugees included a man, his wife and his four-month-old son and another woman and her two children aged six and twelve years.

The refugees said that they were finding it difficult to get food in Sri Lanka.

A boatman dropped them on the fourth island off Arichalmunnai, which is under the control of the Indian Coast Guard. They said they had paid the boatman around Rs 50,000 for the journey. They said many people were waiting to sail to India in boats.

The Coast Guard rescued them using a hovercraft. They were taken to the Coast Guard camp, given food and handed over to police, who took them to the Mandapam camp. Police were investigating. (Times of India)
