Man hacks overseas returnee wife to death; two more women injured in assault!

A 33-year old woman was killed and her sister and a friend were critically injured when they were mercilessly hacked with a sharp weapon by the woman's husband last night at Webada in Weliweriya.

The Weliweriya Police have initiated an inquiry into the incident following a tip off that the suspect had attempted to commit suicide by jumping into a well near the house after the assaulting his wife who had recently returned from overseas, to death.

The woman died instantaneously, while the victim's sister and her friend were admitted to the Ragama Hospital with serious injuries.

The deceased was a resident of Webada North.

Police said the deceased and the suspect are a married couple and the deceased has been abroad since 2019 and returned on April 22.

The investigation revealed that the couple had a dispute over an argument while she was abroad and that the murder had taken place as a result.

The suspect, a 37-year-old resident of Matara, slit his throat by himself with the same sharp weapon and jumped into the well in an attempt to end his life.

He was taken to the Gampaha Hospital under police protection for treatment. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
