Shortage of 76 essential drugs

 


There is a shortage of 76 varieties of essential medicines while the total payments due to the local suppliers of medicine and medical equipment is a staggering Rs 33 billion, the Prime Minister’s office said yesterday.

This information was revealed at a meeting which Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had with Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, and other officials including former Ministers Ruwan Wijewardene and Keheliya Rambukwella.

It was disclosed that the current stock of medications required for Anesthesia during surgeries would be sufficient for only 90 days.

It was further revealed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that an agreement was reached with the Indian government to settle a US $200 million outstanding payment for essential drugs purchased under the Indian credit line, Meanwhile the Prime Minister has called for the submission of a report on the current stocks of available essential drugs and a list of drugs which are of short supply.

A major decision made during the discussion is to amendment the Pharmaceutical Regulatory Bill.
