A Tamilian's achievement as the president of the World Association of Surgeons.

Professor Thavam Thambipillai assumed office today as the new President of the International College of Surgeons. Prof. Thambipillai, originally from Kaithady, Jaffna, is a distinguished alumnus of St. John’s College, Jaffna.

During the troubled period in 1983, he moved to Botswana and later to Ireland, where he completed his medical degree. He subsequently moved to the United States, where he has continued his medical practice. For the past 20 years, he has been a leading transplant surgeon and 15 years lead surgeon at Sanford Health in South Dakota.

He frequently visits Sri Lanka and contributes to numerous health-related programs. He played an instrumental role in establishing the kidney transplant program at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, which continues successfully due to his sustained guidance and involvement.

It is an honor to see Professor Thavam Thambipillai introduced today in Singapore as the President of the World Body of the International College of Surgeons. Dr. Thambipillai, Professor and Vice Chair of Surgery at the Sanford School of Medicine, Surgical Director of the Sanford Transplant Center, and Vice President of IMHO USA, has long been a leader in surgery, medical education, and global humanitarian service. A truly proud and inspiring moment for all of us.
