Decision needed on landslide-risk schools in Central Province

A decision must be taken regarding several schools in the Central Province that are at risk of landslides, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) said.
NBRO Director General Eng. Dr. Asiri Karunawardena said that recent risk assessment inspections have identified several schools in the Nuwara Eliya and Matale districts as being directly exposed to landslide hazards following adverse weather conditions.
He said engineering technology could be used to stabilize some of the affected school premises, while education authorities have been informed about schools where such measures are not feasible and alternative decisions are required.
According to the quality assessment inspection report, no schools in the Kandy district have been identified as at risk, except in the Hasalaka area.
Dr. Karunawardena said that a comprehensive assessment report covering 160 schools in the Central Province has already been handed over to the Minister of Education, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and stressed that the Ministry of Education should act on the recommendations.
He added that further studies are currently underway on the identified high-risk schools, and the latest findings and decisions have been communicated to the Ministry of Education.
