Nawalapitiya–Kandy road reopened after cyclone damage
The Nawalapitiya–Kandy main road, which was damaged by Cyclone Ditwa, was reopened to traffic today (15) after being closed for 18 days, the Road Development Authority (RDA) said.
The RDA said soil and debris that had fallen onto the roadway due to a landslide had been cleared. However, as there remains a risk of further landslides from the slopes above, temporary safety measures have been implemented to allow traffic until a permanent solution is put in place.
The authority urged motorists to exercise caution when using the road until all repair work is fully completed, adding that restrictions have been imposed on the movement of heavy vehicles along this stretch.
Speaking to the media following the reopening, Member of Parliament Thushari Jayasinghe said that most roads damaged in the Pasbhage Korala area had now been repaired and reopened.
She added that the Ulapane–Kandy road is expected to be completed and reopened to traffic within about a week.
