CSE starts 2026 on a strong note as both ASPI and S&P SL20 advance



The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) opened 2026 on a strong note, closing higher in the first trading session of the year amid improved sentiment and stronger activity. The ASPI gained 239.77 points (1.06%) to end at 22,864.08, while the S&P SL20 rose 28.71 points (0.63%) to 6,195.95. Total turnover stood at LKR 5.16 billion on a share volume of 132.96 million.

Turnover was led by the Capital Goods sector, which accounted for LKR 2.37 billion with 43.13 million shares traded. Within the sector, ACL.N recorded the highest turnover contribution, generating LKR 0.62 billion on 6.41 million shares. Crossings amounted to LKR 0.49 billion, representing 9.49% of total turnover, with the day’s largest crossing reported in SPEN.N at LKR 0.12 billion on 0.80 million shares.

Market breadth was positive with 182 gainers and 61 decliners, signalling improving participation despite selective profit-taking. ACL.N was the largest positive contributor to the ASPI, adding 24.61 points, followed by RIL.N, COMB.N, AEL.N and DFCC.N, while JKH.N was the biggest drag, shedding 10.24 points, alongside declines in SFCL.N, RICH.N, NDB.N and CTHR.N. KCAB.N also drew attention with turnover of LKR 265 million on 1.90 million shares, supported by a 16.31% price gain.
