Elle Gunawansa Thera urges Cabinet reshuffle, PM to be removed as Education Minister

  

The Chairman of the National Movement for the Protection of the Nation, Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thera, has sent a letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake requesting that Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya be removed from the post of Minister of Education and that a Cabinet reshuffle be carried out.

In a memorandum to the President, the Thera stated that the unilateral education reforms proposed under the Prime Minister’s leadership pose a serious threat to the country, its people, and the Buddhist Order under the current government.

He further added that a government showing little concern for the nation and its citizens directly causes harm to both the country and the public.

The Thera also criticised the lack of transparency in implementing the reforms, noting that no consultations had been held with Buddhist monks, clergy of other religions, teachers, or education experts. He emphasised that the process adopted for introducing these reforms is fundamentally flawed and therefore lacks validity.

Fulfilling what he described as his historic duty as a Buddhist monk, Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thera expressed hope that President Dissanayake, as Head of State, would take swift action to protect the country, its people, and the Buddhist Order from this perceived danger.
