Magistrate seeks explanation from police over withdrawal of journalist’s case
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today directed the Cinnamon Gardens Police to inform court in writing whether they intend to withdraw the case filed against journalist Gayan Kalpa Gunaratne on charges of criminal force against a police officer and acting in a manner causing a breach of public peace.
When the case was taken up today, the police officer appearing on behalf of the Cinnamon Gardens Police informed court that the matter had been settled amicably with the consent of both parties.
Accordingly, police further informed court that they do not intend to proceed with the case.
After considering the submissions, the Magistrate observed that no facts had been placed before court through a report explaining the basis on which the case was sought to be withdrawn. The Magistrate therefore directed the police to place their position before court in writing on a future date.
The case was fixed for recall on January 26.
The case arises from an incident that occurred at the BMICH during the Colombo International Book Fair in 2024.
Journalist Kalpa Gunaratne was arrested in connection with the incident by the Cinnamon Gardens Police and was later released on bail.
