CSE rally accelerates as ASPI breaks above 21,000
The Colombo Stock Exchange extended its strong recovery for a third consecutive session on 5 November 2026, with both benchmark indices advancing sharply amid broad-based buying.
The ASPI surged 589.18 points, or 2.87%, to close at 21,130.30, decisively moving above the 21,000 level. The S&P SL20 gained an even stronger 3.34% to 6,029.88, reflecting solid participation from large-cap counters.
Market turnover strengthened to LKR 5.43 billion, with 258.33 million shares traded. The Banks sector led activity with approximately LKR 1.10 billion in turnover, while Sampath Bank recorded the highest individual counter turnover at LKR 691.83 million.
Crossings accounted for around 20% of total equity turnover, led by Lanka Milk Foods, Cargills Bank, Tokyo Cement and Royal Ceramics.
Market breadth remained exceptionally strong, with 227 gainers against only 32 decliners, resulting in an advance-decline ratio of 7.09. Foreign investors, however, continued to remain net sellers with an outflow of approximately LKR 227.93 million.
Commercial Bank was the strongest positive contributor to the ASPI, followed by Dialog Axiata, Hayleys, LOLC Holdings and Overseas Realty. Ceylinco Insurance recorded the largest negative contribution.
The combination of a 589-point ASPI gain, turnover well above recent levels and exceptionally strong breadth indicates a significant strengthening in short-term momentum. With the index now firmly above 21,000, this level becomes an important near-term support area, while continued foreign selling remains a key factor to monitor.
