Justice Ranjan Gogoi Becomes India’s First Chief Justice From Northeast

Justice Ranjan Gogoi today took charge as the Chief Justice of India. Justice Gogoi was administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

Justice Gogoi replaces Justice Dipak Misra, who completed a 13-month term as the Chief Justice of India on October 2. Justice Gogoi, 64, will have a similar 13-month tenure as the Chief Justice of India before he retires in November 2019.

Justice Gogoi is the 46th Chief Justice of India and is the first person form the Northeast to hold India’s highest judicial office.

The Chief Justice of India is essentially first among equals. The CJI’s judgments do not have a higher judicial value than that of the other Supreme Court justices.
