Prepare with antibiotics to face Indian black fungus infections: GMOA

Our country needs to prepare by storing antibiotics in case of  the dangerous Indian black fungus infection spreads here, the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) said.

GMOA General Committee Member Dr. Prasad Colombage told the Daily Mirror that certain media reports seen circulating claiming that the Indian 'black fungus' infection has been reported in the Ampara area.

He said there is no truth behind these media reports about the spreading of such fungus infection in the Ampara district, he said.

"I confirmed with several consultants in the Ampara district about this issue, but no incidents have been reported to confirm the spreading of the black fungus in Ampara," he said.

However, we should be prepared to fight the disease if it spreads unfortunately.

While the disease is spreading in our neighbouring India, there are possibilities that the fungus infection might sneak into the island, Dr. Colombage said.

"The COVID patients and others with different diseases had got infected with the black fungus, will expire within 24-hours as their immunization system is not strengthened to fight against," he said.

Therefore, getting ready with early medications and precautions will be advisable, as we do not have time to react if the virus enters the country, he said.

"There are antibiotics such as 'Amphotericin B' to use against that fungus infection, but our country does not have a sufficient volume of those medicines. Therefore, we should import such antibiotics and store them for our future use," Dr. Colombage said.

Most Indians who were infected with COVID-19, who have cancer and also those who underwent transplant surgeries because they have low immunity level in their bodies.

"This fungus is often seen on the dead matter like compost and it signifies full decomposition. It is not harmful to human, but could decrease the immunity level in a human body and thereby posing the danger of being attacked by this fungus," the doctor added.
