NIE to introduce home based learning programme from Aug. 1




While ensuring equal educational rights of all schoolchildren in the country and instead of online teaching practices, a home-based learning programme leading to self-learning will be implemented in the education system from August 1, the National Institute of Education (NIE) said.

An introduction to the programme was held at the NIE premises recently. 

It was introduced by a collective decision of the Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Education Reforms, Open Universities and Distance Learning Promotion State Minister Susil Premajayantha, Education Ministry Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera, Education State Ministry Secretary Dr. Upali Sedara and NIE Director-General Dr. Sunil Jayantha.

The decision was taken for the regular continuation of the education of school children in the country. 

Accordingly, steps have been taken to introduce this programme, realizing the need for a recognized national programme and for those who are at home due to the pandemic situation.

Dr. Upali Sedara, Secretary of State for Education, pointed out that under this programme, there will be an opportunity to find out whether the required learning skills have been acquired in accordance with the grade level and the age group of the child.

"The programme provides the opportunity through print media and even for children without any technical support. Existing ability to obtain a reference to self-study of the lessons, textbook and syllabi. It is noteworthy that this learning content has been developed in association with the teacher's manual to suit each grades," Dr. Sedara said.
