Health authorities on alert to avert dengue epidemic

 

The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) warned of a possible surge in the number of cases within the next few weeks since there were a lot of mosquito breeding places observed by it in the country.

The NDCU, in a statement, said as many as 22,902 Dengue cases were identified by November 4, and 504 of them were reported within the first four days of this month.

The Unit has organized a Dengue prevention programme in the western and eastern provinces between November 8 and 13, 2021.A Public awareness campaign will be carried out during the period in the MOH areas with the participation of health workers, the police, and members of the security forces.

Asserting the country is gradually recovering from the Covid pandemic, the NDCU said a Dengue epidemic should be averted as otherwise, it would be a disastrous situation.

People are urged to destroy places where water is clogged for the Dengue vector to thrive. The NDCU requests people to be alert on such places with stagnant water in their kitchens. Water storage tanks, flower pots and vases, garden fountains, birdbaths, fridge trays, water dispenser trays, broken cisterns, discarded bottles, tins, discarded tyres, coconut shells are all possible sites for mosquitoes to breed.
