43 Indian fishermen arrested with six trawlers in local waters!!

The Sri Lanka Navy arrested at least 43 Indian fishermen and seized six trawlers for allegedly poaching in the country’s territorial waters and engaging in illegal fishing in seas off Delft isles, Jaffna, the navy said.

The suspects were taken into custody during a search operation by Navy personnel early this morning.

According to the Navy, the arrests of Indian fishermen had been temporarily withheld due to COVID threat; however, they were forced to launch search operations again due to the protest by local fishermen.

The arrested fishermen have been directed to a quarantine centre and are to be produced before courts. (Romesh Madushanka)
