NTC to take legal action against charging more than revised bus fares

Raids have been initiated to take legal action against the bus crew members for charging bus fares higher than the revised bus fares, National Transport Commission (NTC) Director General Nilan Miranda said.

He said the raids were conducted following complaints received by the NTC alleging that certain private buses charge more than the revised fare.

Therefore, the NTC informed all passenger transport authorities to assign all their mobile inspectors to investigate the incidents on provincial buses. Moreover, the Director General said that several mobile inspection teams attached to the NTC have been assigned, he said.

Fines have been imposed and legal action has been taken against certain bus owners and conductors who were involved in the incidents, and arrangements have been made to repay the additional amount charged from the commuters, Miranda said

"Raids have been conducted on nearly 100 inter-provincial buses since last Friday (5), but we have not received the details of the provincial buses yet. But we have informed the provincial offices to conduct individual raids and investigations," he said.

"The NTC has conducted many awareness programs, such as publishing the revised bus fares before taking legal action against them. Later, we were advised by the bus operators to display the latest bus fare revision inside the buses where people could see it clearly. Then we started raids across the country with our limited inspection squads." he added.
