Female in the workplace: PM highlights lack of institutional facilities!

Women MPs’ Caucus moots right to vote for women unable to go home due to work, flexi-work hours

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya highlighted that while the number of women in some workplaces has significantly increased, the institutional-level facilities for women remain insufficient to achieve optimal quality and productivity of the female workforce. She also emphasised the need to create an environment where women have proper representation in the workplace.

She stated this at a meeting to discuss the future activities of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus held recently.

During the meeting, the Chairperson of the Caucus and Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj emphasised the importance of creating a safe workplace for women and highlighted that to empower women, social security measures must be in place, allowing women to join the workforce without barriers.

The Caucus also addressed the challenge that women face in joining the workforce due to their responsibilities in caring for and nurturing children. It was discussed that due to this situation, even women with the highest education levels lose the opportunity to join the workforce.

The issues faced by women in the plantation sector were also discussed and attention was drawn to the need for policy and legal changes to protect their rights. Apart from this, proposals including the right to vote for women who are unable to come home due to work, and introducing flexible working hours in order to make women's domestic labour into social labour were also discussed.
