Screen-based activities linked to rising vitamin D deficiency among children
Health experts have raised concerns over a growing vitamin D deficiency among children, linking the issue to increased screen-based activities that limit exposure to early morning sunlight, a key natural source of the nutrient.
Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera said excessive use of mobile phones, tablets and other digital devices has resulted in children spending more time indoors, particularly during the early hours when sunlight is most effective for vitamin D absorption.
“Morning sunlight is vital not only for natural vitamin D production but also for encouraging physical activity, which is essential for children’s physical and mental development,” Dr. Perera said.
He warned that low vitamin D levels could weaken children’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to various illnesses and infections.
Dr. Perera urged parents to reduce children’s screen time and encourage outdoor activities in the early morning to promote healthier lifestyles and improve long-term health outcomes among children.
