Selliah Nalliah honoured for service to Victoria’s Tamil and Hindu communities


Selliah Nalliah of Wheelers Hill, Melbourne has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division, recognising his longstanding service to the Tamil and Hindu communities in Victoria.


The OAM is one of Australia’s national honours, acknowledging individuals who have made a meaningful contribution through sustained service and community involvement. Mr. Nalliah’s recognition highlights the importance of community-led efforts that strengthen cultural identity, support wellbeing, and build social cohesion across Victoria.


Members of the Tamil and Hindu communities have welcomed the acknowledgement as a proud moment, reflecting years of commitment and dedication to community life. The award also serves as a reminder of the vital role volunteers and community leaders play in supporting families, preserving traditions, and contributing positively to Australia’s multicultural fabric.


Mr Nalliah has held leadership roles across multiple community organisations, including serving as President and Secretary of the Tamil Senior Citizens Fellowship (Victoria) Inc, Vice President and Honorary Secretary of the Hindu Society of Victoria Inc, and Secretary of the Tamil Senior Citizens Saiva Funeral Services Association. He has also contributed to the City of Monash’s Positive Ageing Reference Group and serves as Patron of the Chavakachcheri Hindu College Old Students Association Victoria Inc.
